met on a double date in 1938

Ray and Mary Mott's home in rural Champaign County is small and simple and surrounded on all sides by silent, open fields.

The couple have lived here for 51 of their 67 years together.Largely housebound now because of Ray's health issues, they live, by their own admission, a quiet life. Mary, 88, looks after Ray, 87, monitoring his oxygen tank and taking care of his daily needs.

On Oct. 26 the couple quietly celebrated their 67th wedding anniversary. Ray gave Mary 18 bright pink roses. Cards poured in from family, friends and well wishers, 67 cards to be exact, one for each year of marriage.

The two met on a double date in 1938 and, according to Mary, it was far from love at first sight. Attending an outdoor movie with another couple, accommodations were somewhat cramped.

Dafoes' 65th anniversary

Ralph and June Dafoe didn't want their family to make a big fuss out of their wedding anniversary today.

"They went out of their way for our 25th, 40th, 50th and 60th anniversaries and I kept saying, 'Nothing doing this year, you've done enough,' but they didn't listen," June said.

"You just can't ignore a 65th anniversary," granddaughter Kara Nolan said. "It's just too significant, especially considering how well grandma and grandpa get along."

DOUBLE DIAMOND

TWO special couples whose lives have been world’s apart celebrated 60 years of marriage yesterday.

As the Queen and The Duke of Edinburgh enjoyed a Royal walkabout in Malta, Joe and Isobel Lightfoot enjoyed a more low-key get-together with family and friends at Parkfield Residential Care home in Carlisle.

It may not have had the glamour of the Queen’s celebrations, which also included a service in Westminster Abbey the day before, but the party at the London Road nursing home was every bit as important for the happy couple.

Their smiles said it all: a lifetime of togetherness, shared with the people who matter most in their lives.

A Diamond Day to remember

THE bride borrowed her dress, the groom wore the suit he was demobbed in and friends and family chipped in to help pay for the reception. With war-time rationing still in place, guests dined on steak pies or stew and the happy couple can't remember if there was a cake.

It was far removed from the glitzy wedding at Westminster Abbey that same day of Princess Elizabeth to young naval lieutenant Philip Mountbatten. But 60 years on today and Adam and Teresa Lockerbie still recall their low-key wedding in Blackburn, West Lothian, as the happiest day of their lives.

The pair, who are both 83, are sprightly and smartly dressed, each in newly-shone shoes. Teresa has just lifted a fine home-baked apple tart from the oven and Adam is relaxing on a well-earned day off from his job as a school crossing agent. They remember watching the Queen's celebrations on TV back in November 20, 1947 - but did not let it detract from their own big day, which began with a ceremony at Our Lady of Lourdes Church in the centre of Blackburn.

Recalls Adam: "We got married at 9am and had a wedding breakfast and then in the evening we had a reception at the Miners' Welfare Club. I think we saw some of the Queen's ceremony on the television in the afternoon." Teresa adds: "Our wedding was just as nice. It did the job anyway."

Royal celebrations for queen's 60th wedding anniversary

Royal family and friends gathered in Westminster Abbey on Monday to celebrate Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip's diamond wedding anniversary, in the church where they wed 60 years ago.

After the thanksgiving service the couple, whose marriage is the longest in English royal history, were set to fly to Malta for the anniversary itself Tuesday, to relive their newlywed days on the Mediterranean island.

A 2,000-strong congregation including Prime Minister Gordon Brown and former premiers Margaret Thatcher and John Major were invited to the service, alongside religious and military chiefs and 30 royal family members.

"A glittering celebration for the Queen," headlined the Daily Telegraph over a front-page picture of the 81-year-old monarch. The service was to be broadcast live on television from 1130 GMT.

The queen's grandson Prince William, second in line to the throne, was to give a reading. In contrast to the anti-German sentiment of 1947, some of Prince Philip's German relations have been invited this time.

Following the ceremony, the couple were to unveil a new panoramic panel in Parliament Square over the road, showing key local landmarks.

But the most personal part of the anniversary programme will be their Malta trip -- an idea of Prince Philip's. The former queen of Malta and her husband will be guests of the republic's government.

Queen Elizabeth is known to cherish the time they spent on Malta as a young couple, out of Britain and out of the spotlight in the years before she inherited the throne aged 25 in 1952.

"Malta is a special place for the queen and the Duke of Edinburgh," a spokeswoman for Buckingham Palace, the queen's official residence, told AFP.

The young princess married the Royal Navy Lieutenant Philip Mountbatten, a prince of Greece and Denmark five years her senior and a distant cousin, on November 20, 1947.

Wedding anniversary

A wedding anniversary is an anniversary which falls on the month and day a particular wedding took place, and which recurs every other subsequent year, except for those who were married on February 29th. Married persons who regard the day of their marriage as important may mark the occasion in some special way.

The 25th (silver) or 30th anniversaries are often marked within the immediate family, (eg with a special family holiday), since they tend to coincide with the end of the child-rearing phase of family life.

Broader groups in society, especially the extended families (including any grand children), may help to celebrate later events, such as the 40th, 50th, and 60th anniversaries.

In the United Kingdom and Commonwealth countries, one can receive a message from Queen Elizabeth II for the 60th, 65th, and 70th wedding anniversaries, and any wedding anniversary after the 70th.[1] This is done by applying to Buckingham Palace, or to the Governor-General's office in Commonwealth countries

Couple forgoes gifts to help those in need

After 60 years of marriage, Mary Ella Ty singer Barefoot and Charles Barefoot figured they had received enough presents and collectibles to fill their Arcadia community home.

So when it came time for the 79 th to celebrate their 60 th wedding anniversary in late October, they did not want anyone to bring gifts for them to their party. Instead, the couple asked their guests to bring gifts for others who are really in need.

The result was a truck bed full — 36 boxes — of food for Crisis Ministry of Davidson County’s food pantry.

“We did not need anything,” Mrs. Barefoot said.

“At this age, if you don’t already have it, you don’t need it,” Mr. Barefoot chimed in.

Couple Prepares to Celebrate 75th Wedding Anniversary

On the cusp of their 75 wedding anniversary, Arthur and Luella say their marriage wasn't easy - but it was definitely worth it.

The Dodge County couple's diamond anniversary is Dec. 5 but they plan to celebrate the event on Dec. 2 the only way they can imagine - surrounded by a family that includes 14 children, 54 grandchildren, 86 great grandchildren and four great-great grandchildren.

"It'll be a hectic weekend," said Arthur, 93. "Saturday all the family will be there."

Arthur and Luella may not have envisioned such a large clan when they met at the age of 16 at a cousin's wedding in 1929.

"I had a crush on him," admitted Luella.

Though Luella and Arthur crossed paths numerous times that evening as they helped wait tables, it would be another 1 1/2 years before their first date. They had met again at another cousin's wedding, and Arthur found himself so enamored of Luella that he asked her out the following week.

"We went to a dance and he doesn't even dance," Luella said. "We just started going out together after that."

The lovebirds got engaged soon thereafter, tying the knot on Dec. 5, 1931.

"She asked me," Arthur joked about their engagement.

Man eats 50-year-old chicken for golden wedding anniversary

A sentimental husband in Denton, Greater Manchester, has celebrated his golden wedding anniversary by eating a 50 year old can of chicken.

They kept hold of the tin through numerous house moves, explaining to the BBC: “I always said 'on my 50th wedding anniversary I'm going to eat that chicken' so I did.”

He added: “It was all right. But I don't like chicken.”The couple ate everything else in their wedding hamper, but with post-war rationing still in effect, a whole canned chicken was a rare delicacy. Les reported: “It tasted just like ordinary chicken. A little bit salty but that was my fault for not cooking it like I should have done.” Beryl was not too impressed with her husband's romantic gesture: “If it was a diamond ring or something You have got to finish reading this one. Wedding Anniversaries

An anniversary is a unique celebration, a moment that symbolizes the timelessness of love. As each year passes it recalls the happiness of the past, while creating wonderful new memories for the future.

Before the middle-to-late 1930s, not all wedding anniversaries had a material representing the celebration year. Only the 1st, and milestone anniversaries such as, 10th, 20th, 25th, 50th and 70th had a material gift suggestion. Further materials for the traditional list were added by an American jewelery association. Why there was a long gap between 50th and 70th and for many years, and why there was no material representing 65th anniversary is not known. Over the years more materials were added and the list up-dated and modernized by various American and British commercial companies.

Traditionally gifts exchanged or from family and friends in the early years of marriage were...

Strike up the pipes for wedding anniversary

THE SOUNDS of Scotland were brought to one Petersfield couple celebrating their 65th wedding anniversary.
John and Marge Kitchener, of Siward House, Borough Road, called the tune on Saturday as they toasted the landmark to the music of a Scottish piper.

Marge said: “We used to go to Scotland a lot but we can’t get there so much these days and we thought we would like to have a bagpiper with us on our anniversary. It was lovely – he played really beautifully.”

65 years of marriage most of us will be lucky to get half of that. This would be another one of those couples to wright a book for younger couples to live by.
