It's unclear whether July 7, 2007, will be the luckiest wedding day of the century, but it will certainly be one of the busiest this year.
Hotels, wedding planners, caterers, florists and bakers are scrambling to deal with the flood of couples rushing to the altar on 07/07/07. They're juggling more events than usual. Some are hiring extra help. Old hands say the crush will exceed the number of millennium marriages or those celebrated on a typical Valentine's Day.
There are no official numbers for this day. But one indicator is TheKnot.com, a popular wedding Web site. More than 38,000 couples in TheKnot.com's registry are planning to wed next Saturday — more than triple the average number of couples that signed up to marry on a Saturday in July 2006, said Christa Vagnozzi, a senior editor.
The date is popular for many reasons, as seven is considered an auspicious number in a variety of cultures.
"It's a little extra luck for a happy, long marriage. Any little bit helps," said Deepak Baskaran, 30, of Baltimore, who will be getting married next Saturday in the District. "Plus I'll never forget that anniversary date, or I'll be in big trouble."
In the Orthodox Jewish tradition, the bride circles the groom seven times when she arrives at the chuppah, a canopy used in weddings, symbolizing in part the seven days of creation. Seven candles are lit during Kwanzaa. There are seven wonders of the world. The Big Dipper is formed from seven stars. Buddha is said to have walked seven steps upon his birth. The Islamic tradition believes in seven levels of heaven. The ancient city of Rome was said to be built on seven hills. There are seven deadly sins, as well as virtues, in some Christian traditions. And gamblers hit the jackpot with the slot machine combination 7-7-7.

Some of us are commemorating June 2007 as the 30th anniversary of the release of "Star Wars," a date that has definitely gone down in America's pop culture infamy.
For those less interested in galaxies far, far away, but still hooked on the sounds of 30 summers ago, June 2007 marks another milestone: the anniversary of the first-ever Foreigner radio hit, "Feels Like the First Time."
It's a hit certain to be a cornerstone of the band's first Central Illinois concert in several decades, at 7 p.m. June 24 in the U.S. Cellular Coliseum (along with old Top 40 cronies Styx).
Part of the soundtrack to the summer of "Star Wars," the hard-driving anthem worked its way to No. 4 before the hot weather cooled down (at which time, its apt encore, "Cold As Ice," was conditioning the airwaves).
And it paved the way for another dozen or so hits over the next decade, most of them practically defining the classic- rock sound of the '70s and '80s.
When all this was happening, Jason Bonham was playing the scene-stealing part of Led Zeppelin drummer John Bonham's precocious 10-year-old son.
Though Jason is Foreigner's drummer for the 21st century, this is now and that was then.
Back in the 20th century, Bonham was like any other 10-year-old kid, even if he did hail from the U.K.: He was hot to see "Star Wars."
Following their April split after dating for five years, Prince William and former girlfriend Kate Middleton have resumed their relationship, according to widespread coverage in British newspapers on Sunday.
The two, both 25, attended a party earlier this month at an army barracks where William is posted as an army officer, say the reports.
In addition, William has invited Middleton, who is an accessories buyer at a company called Jigsaw, to the Concert for Diana, in memory of his mother, scheduled for London's Wembley Stadium next Sunday, the Mail on Sunday reports.
C.R. and Aline “Mae” Carter celebrated their 80th year as husband and wife last Sunday with a celebration given by their many family and friends.
“The party was absolutely wonderful,” Mae said Monday. “We had people there from Jonesboro, West Memphis and even Mississippi.”
Their marriage, while records are not tabulated in Arkansas, may be the longest in the state considering the record is 83 years by a couple in Rhode Island.
Understandably, considering the longevity of their life together, both are a long way from the young man and woman they were on June 27, 1927, when they pledged their vows. At the time, he was 21 while she was 17.
Both grew up in Trumann, Mae having three sisters and three brothers, while C.R had four sisters and two half-sisters. Showing that his longevity is somewhat hereditary, one C.R.’s sisters lived to the age of 100.
“I went to the seventh grade,” Mae said when asked how far they got with their schooling. “His father was a woodsman, though, and all he wanted to do was stay in the woods.”
She didn’t know for sure, but she thought, as a result of his not putting too much stock in schooling, he went only as far as about the third grade.
They dated for two to three years - they couldn’t remember the exact length of time - before they decided to make their life together. At their advanced ages of 101 and 97 now they can be forgiven if they don’t remember a number of things from their early life together.
Actress Kelly Rowan is making many girls jealous with her latest endeavor. The former "The O.C." star has announced she is going to marry David Thomson, the richest man in Canada!
The couple, who met in 2006 when they crossed paths in Toronto, are set to have wedding bells ringing later this year when Rowan is set to become part of Thomson's estimated $22 billion fortune.
However, this won't be the billionaire's first time tying the knot. The 50-year-old has been married twice before and has three kids. Rowan, on the other hand, will be a newbie to marriage.
Rowan played fan's favorite mom Kirsten Cohen on "The O.C." before the show came to an end in February.
... were married 64 years when she left this world recently.
What an amazing love story!
Ruth Graham, surrendered dreams of missionary work in Tibet to marry the world's most renowned evangelist.
She met Billy Graham at Wheaton College in Illinois. He recalled in 1997 memoirs, "If I had not been smitten with love at first sight of Ruth Bell I would certainly have been the exception. Many of the men at Wheaton thought she was stunning."
Billy Graham courted her, managing to coax her away from the foreign missions calling and into marriage after both graduated in 1943. In 1945, after a brief stint pastoring a suburban Chicago congregation, he became a roving speaker for the fledgling Youth for Christ organization.
From that point onward she had to endure her husband's frequent absences, remarking, "I'd rather have a little of Bill than a lot of any other man."
This would sure spare that year old freezer burnt wedding anniversary cake, wouldn't it?
For the budget-minded bride and groom, here's an idea: Rent a fake wedding cake.
The idea is to have an elegant, multitiered pretend cake for show while serving guests slices from a real but inexpensive sheet cake.
The inside of a faux wedding cake crafted by Fun Cakes contains mostly plastic foam, with a secret spot reserved for a slice of real cake to be shared by the bride and groom.
Everything is covered by gum paste and fondant, a frosting-like confection made from sugar and water often used in cakes and pastries.
"The only difference is the inside. Nobody can tell," said Kimberly Aya, whose 3-month-old company also bakes real cakes.
Fake cakes aren't new but renting them is fairly novel. Bride-to-be Nicole Kreuger, 26, of Grand Rapids, Mich., said she will spend about half as much on a fake wedding cake paired up with a sheet cake as she would have spent on a real cake.
Fifty years is an accomplishment, whether it is a wedding anniversary or a business anniversary.
The 50th anniversary of a family business, however, is even more rare.
Rana's New Generation is celebrating the 50th anniversary of being a Niles mainstay. They have planned a variety of specials and events throughout the year to celebrate.
Rana Steiner first opened her hair salon in 1957 on Ferry Street.

You know it's a sad day when insurance like this is actually selling...
Fireman’s Fund Insurance Co. has enhanced its wedding insurance policy to include “cold feet” among the many possible causes of event cancellation.
“The price of weddings has escalated,” said Erron Al-Amin, senior director of personal marketing. “People are spending almost $30,000 for these events on a nationwide average. And in the affluent Bay Area, that figure is even higher. If you’re going to put that much money into a wedding, it’s best to protect your investment.”
The policy is administered through insurance agent RV Nuccio & Associates in Southern California. It protects against many of the things that can ruin a wedding, such as bad weather, flood, fire, power failure at the event venue, lost or damaged attire and vendors such as photographers or florists who fail to show up.
The enhanced policy includes refunds of lost deposits if venues or professionals fail to provide services, professional counseling needed for the emotional distress of a canceled event, payment up to a pre-specified limit for non-refundable expenses incurred through cancellation and the costs incurred by the wedding party if photographs need to be re-staged.
“Fireman’s Fund brought this policy to the United States from Europe about 15 years ago,” Ms. El-Amin said. “And recently we’ve been getting fathers of the bride asking, ‘What happens if somebody backs out?’ So we got the idea to enhance the coverage on the cancellation side.”
Ms. El-Amin said that Fireman’s Fund has traditionally used statistics from Conde Nast Bridal Group surveys, the last one conducted in 2006. Pertinent trends include people waiting longer to tie the knot, which means they have more assets to invest in a wedding – and thus to protect – and more destination weddings in places like Puerto Rico and the British Virgin Islands, which are prone to hurricanes.
The Conde Nast survey data also show that the average cost of a wedding has grown by 73 percent from 1990 to 2005 to nearly $27,000.
“The question you have to ask yourself,” Ms. El-Amin said, “is can you afford to pay for an event twice?”
Ellen Pompeo is dishing on her upcoming wedding to fiancé Chris Ivery, but she’s warning not to expect anything extravagant.
"There will be no 'big' anything," the “Grey's Anatomy” star says. “"It's going to be very small."
Ellen’s keeping her lips sealed on other details about the big nuptials, revealing only that the ceremony won’t take place in Los Angeles.
“We were thinking about going away and getting married," she said.
Ellen, 37, met record producer Chris Ivery at an L.A. grocery store in 2003.
After striking up a friendship, they quickly discovered that they’d grown up just 10 miles away from each other in Massachusetts.
"We have a lot in common," Ellen said. “We're from the same hometown, almost."
Ellen says her fiancé has changed her life because, “I just have somebody to share everything with, all of these moments. The bad ones and the good ones. We have a very strong bond, and we just understand each other. He's just a real companion."
So when Ivery proposed on her 37th birthday, she knew it was coming.
“Chris and I have been together for four and a half years, so I was completely surprised, but not that surprised,” Ellen admitted. “We've been together awhile."
